This thing called gambling.

This thing called gambling.

The recent spike in Kenyans making millions through gambling has sparked up the debate which has been on Kenyans minds since the betting industry started booming late last year. There have been supporters and opposition with the later having most of the limelight. This article seems to further seek what points from the scripture on the matter.

The reason gambling should be highly discouraged is for the vices that accompany it. The love of money, addiction, covetousness, laziness accompanied with wishful thinking, the love of worldly things as well as other reasons. These verses below speak on the vices highlighted.

Mark 8:36 (NKJV), “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”

Hebrews 13:5 (ESV), “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'”

Ecclesiastes 5:10 (NASB), “He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income. This too is vanity.”

1 John 2:16 ESV: For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world.

These factors should not be ignored and should lead our discouragement towards it. It, however, should be noted that gambling isn’t rooted in evil. Nobody is forced to gamble and it simply relies on the concept of accumulating of funds from volunteers on the basis of the rule of chance.

1 Timothy 6:10King James Version (KJV): 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

We do not all love money but we all need it. The bible very clearly highlights that the love of it will bring sorrows and will be a pathway to evil. It, however, cannot be a true claim that everyone who gambles loves money.

There are those who argue that unemployment has caused many to turn to gambling as a source of income. Advice to them would be to turn to God.

Deuteronomy 8:18New International Version (NIV): 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

The LORD is well and able to provide for the needs of those who truly follow him. It is important to remember that what one wants is not necessarily what one needs.

Psalms 34: 9 (NASB), O fear the LORD, you His saints; For to those who fear Him there is no want. 10: The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, But they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing.

There has been good and bad that has come from gambling with the negative overwhelming the positive. For this reason, something that will highly bring negative results should not be discouraged but it should not be a selling point that absolutely no good can come from it. That would be dishonest. Any good thing that we say has come from God has to be put through God’s checklist and not our own for what may be good in our eyes may not be good in God’s. It is very possible but difficult for someone to gamble and improve their life from it but the chances are extremely slim and with all the vices involved, it is not worth the risk.

Decide your story

Decide your story

Unending peace and limitless love,

Infinite mercy and grace,

Access to He who has no one above,

No discrimination of tribe, family or race,

Giver of slumber and rest,

Comfort in times of distress,

One who wishes for you only the best,

And isn’t there to impress,

All this there for the taking,

Yet you decide not to have it,

I ask why?

Why book a spot in the world of despair?

Why put your trust on mortal man?

Why live a life without care?

Why not choose one who has a plan?

Why shy off from glory?

For you think things will just merrily flow,

Although the Lord is writing your story,

You decide how it will go.

The year has just begun and the word I see being thrown around a lot is ‘new.’ New meaning a change from the usual, a turn from the old. I’d like to assume that the change to be desired is a positive one and that’s what the topic of intrapersonality is about..somehow.

Intrapersonality is a word I’ve made up from the phrase intrapersonal communication that means communicating within oneself. Intrapersonality is that dominant voice within yourself. Inherently there is more than one voice or thought when making a decision and the one we tend to listen to most forms our intrapersonality. The stronger and more goal-oriented your intrapersonality, the better for you.

Don’t worry, it will get clearer as we move along.

The most limiting factor to one’s success is oneself. Yes there are environmental factors such as finances, physical constraints and all that but one can still have the required resources and not reach their goals- that’s only because of themselves. That’s why people get amazed when a man with no limbs starts swimming  or someone underprivileged achieves success that was unexpected: they didn’t have the physical resources required to achieve what they did but they still did it. This shows that there is a resource that we all have yet few of us exploit and that is ourselves. I firmly believe that having a strong intrapersonality is one of the best, if not the best, ways of tapping into this resource.

Think of it this way. A student wants to do an assignment or an employee has a report to hand in and they are using the internet for research. In this day and age it is not uncommon to find someone drifting off into websites such as Facebook, YouTube or even WordPress and completely being distracted from the task at hand. I myself had to fight my way through two other sites before I finally began writing this blog.

The only one at fault here is the student or the employee. They made a conscious decision to go and to stay in these websites. To stop being distracted all they have to do is to close the webpages. That’s easier said than done and this is where intrapersonality comes in. They themselves know that they’re supposed to be working and have that voice inside their heads as a constant reminder. They’re having a conversation at the back of their minds on whether they should go on or not. Resultantly, the more convincing or ‘stronger’ voice wins.

It may seem that the decision leading to that distraction is unconscious or automatic. Making the choice to go to that website is a decision that went through one’s mind, so is the decision to remain there. The constant listening to the negative voice is what made it so strong that one feels that they can’t help it anymore.

I now believe that you have a hint to what I’m talking about. What we have to do is simply make sure that the ‘sane’ voice, the voice telling us to go back to work, to stop that bad habit, not to procrastinate, that we don’t have to stay in bed for five more minutes, that we don’t have to watch one more episode.. we have to make sure that voice wins. All those little rules and little laws we set for ourselves aren’t set in stone- we are the governing bodies, just as we set them we can change or break them. The sooner you realize that you are the greatest enemy to your own progress the sooner you can start progressing.

We now know who and what the problem is , the how is what I want to highlight. It’s very simple. In forming your intapersonality, there are opposing voices, and once you have established them, feed the side in line with your goal.

An example. It’s morning. You had planned to go jogging. You start having that conversation of whether you should leave bed or stay. Both sides will have seemingly valid arguments but you will tend to give one side more preference and that side will next time be stronger. What you want to do is consciously choose the side that’ll help accomplish your goal. Once you make that conscious decision the first time then it will be subsequently easier. Once you get out of bed once, it will be easier the next time. What you are doing  in very simplistic terms is feeding the side in line with your goal and making your intrapersonality more positively oriented.

Making that conscious decision will give yourself an advantage with future conversations, it will make the discussion shorter and more effective. This will turn negative decisions and habits into positive ones. Once you win the war within yourself you will be better placed to battle the wars of life.

So make a conscious decision to positively strengthen your intrapersonality and don’t let the calendar be the only thing that changes this year.

Power of perception.

Power of perception.

This life has a lot of ups and downs and it may seem that the downs are more but that isn’t really the case. It just that we don’t consider most of the ups and emphasize on the negative. Its human nature.

Another not so good part of human nature is the difficulty in accepting the pitfalls in life, keeping on focusing on those negative occurrences and letting them eat us up and affect our present and future negatively. We choose to be burdened by what we could have done to make it better, how we could have acted, constantly reminding ourselves of our failures and denying ourselves future victories.

This all comes down to how we perceive the situations we are in and how we react to them.

Lets say you are a student and you have one hour to read forty pages, or maybe even two hours before that test or examination. My experience with other people experiencing these or similar situations is that they will use most of the time lamenting of how they should have read and how they can’t finish reading in time. All this anxiety they are harboring can be averted when you accept the situation that yes, you haven’t read, you can’t change the past, what you can do is make the most of your present so as to positively affect your future.

The example above was just an example of many situations in life that we let “get to us”. Another example is someone who has invested into a venture. Maybe you have a farm and you have worked and toiled but the rains don’t come or your farm gets attacked by pests. There are two reactions to this. The farmer could give up or blame the heavens for not producing rain, and nature for bringing pests but that wont change anything. It will only add negativity to the situation. The farmer could also analyse the situation, accept it and learn from it by ensuring that there’s enough pesticide and a water irrigation system next planting season.

The best thing we can do with failure is learn from it. Blaming yourself or others is only beneficial if it will help you turn around that certain negative aspect about you. If whatever action you take after a problem occurs will not have a positive impact then it is nothing but a waste of time or another problem.

Think of life decisions as fruit on a tree. You have the choice of choosing the fruit, you make the effort to pick it. You however do not have the power to make it sweet or bitter, yes it may have looked ripe and juicy but beyond your perception the taste of the fruit is up to the tree and if the fruit is bitter you may get bitter and throw away the seeds thus wasting them or you may go plant them somewhere else and give rise to other fruits some sweet some bitter.

The same applies to life. Yes you make a decision, you put effort into it but the outcome may or may not be what you expect and whether or not you like it you will have to live with it.The only thing that we have control over the outcome is where we go after we die and that is my Christian viewpoint. All these other things in life we can just give our all, pray to God and hope for the best. The sooner we realize that we are the ones who make our life so hard the sooner we can change it. Its not easy but its not impossible either.

Motivation (Anonymous)

Don’t complicate life. We won’t be here forever. Once this day is over, it’s gone forever. Your time is too valuable to waste on nonsense.

No matter what knocks you down in life, get back up and keep going.
Never give up. Great blessings are a result of great perseverance.

Talking about our problems is our greatest addiction. Break the habit.
Talk about your joys.

Good things come to those who believe, better things come to those who are patient, and the best things come to those who don’t give up.

Do not pray for an easy life; pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.

Disappointments were not meant to destroy you. They were meant to strengthen you & give you fortitude to accomplish your God-given destiny.

We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but of appreciating what we do have.

Your child will follow your example, not your advice.

One day, you’ll be just a memory for some people. Do your best to be a good one.

Associate yourself with people of good quality, for it is better to be alone than in bad company.

Don’t fear change. You may lose something good, but you may also gain something great.

When you love what you have, you have everything you need.

The greatest act of faith some days is to simply get up and face another day.

Never let the things you want make you forget the things you have. *GRATITUDE.

Commitment means staying loyal to what you said you were going to do, long after the mood you said it in has left you. *COMMITMENT

When you choose to forgive those who have hurt you, you take away their power.

Patience is not the ability to wait, but how you act while you’re waiting.

Isn’t it ironic:
– We ignore the ones that adore us
– Adore the ones who ignore us
– Love the ones who hurt us
– Hurt the ones that love us

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together. Every story has an end, but in life every end is just a new beginning.

You were born to win, although to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, & expect to win.

Every day is a NEW beginning, take a deep breath and START AGAIN.

You are loved.
You are wonderfully made.
You are beautiful.
You have purpose.
You are a masterpiece.

Don’t compare your progress with that of others. We all need our own time to travel our own distance.

Surround yourself only with people who are going to lift you higher.

Bad things happen:
– Every day.
-To everyone.
The difference is in how people deal with it.

When you make a commitment, you build hope. When you keep it, you build trust.

Two things define you: Your patience when you have nothing, and your attitude when you have everything.

Being honest may not get you a lot of FRIENDS but it’ll always get you the RIGHT ONES.

Shoutout to everyone trying to get their life together. Working on yourself is the hardest part of life. Keep going, no matter where you are.

Be selective in your battles. Sometimes peace is better than being right.

Keep people in your life who truly love you, motivate you, and make you happy. If you know people who do none of these things, let them go.

Be happy not because everything is good, but because you can see the good side of everything. *OPTIMISM

NO ➔ Shortcuts
NO ➔ Quick fixes
NO ➔ Blaming others
NO ➔ I’ll do tomorrows

Surround yourself with positive people who will support you when it rains, not just when it shines.

Being defeated is often a temporary condition; giving up is what makes it permanent.
Enjoy God’s grace on this journey we call LIFE.*

GOOD PEOPLE. (By Carol Kariuki)

There are many good people in the world, yes, good people

People who get concerned

People who care

People who cry from hurt and painful despair

Overshadowed by malice and chaos

You’d wonder where they hide

Do they have a secret sanctuary

Where rule one is humanity

There are many good people in the world, yes, good people

People who don’t judge your ethnicity

People who don’t judge your sexuality,

A world without judgement,

wouldn’t that be a sight,

A world without fear of what fellow man can do

A world where I can borrow sugar a block away

There are many good people in the world, yes, good people

It doesn’t matter what man has done

If you cant find good people …be one.
